A quick primer, with a fact-check
The phrase "without an official report" describes the situation before mid-2025. That's no longer accurate. Google officially launched the channel performance report for exactly this task, with full detail available for dates after June 6, 2025. The channel distribution table inside that report gives a spend breakdown for each channel: Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Maps, Gmail, and Search partners. That's exactly the workaround people used to need before the report existed.
If the report isn't available yet in your account, or you need data from before June 2025, the officially documented mechanics of budget allocation still apply: PMax automatically distributes budget across channels like Search, Display, YouTube, Shopping, and Discover based on where it predicts the highest return, with bids formed dynamically from predicted conversion probability and value, informed by history, user intent, audience signals, and your CPA or ROAS targets. Before the channel report existed, the closest workaround was the placement report, but Google is explicit that it shouldn't be used performance since it doesn't cover every channel; it's a brand-safety tool, not a spend-analysis one.
What to check before you touch anything
- Whether the channel performance report is already available in your account. If it is, the task is solved directly through the channel distribution table, no workaround needed.
- What date range you actually need. For anything before June 6, 2025, the official report won't have full detail, and you'll need to rely on indirect signals instead.
- Whether you're confusing the placement report with the channel performance report. The first is for brand safety and doesn't cover every channel; the second is built for exactly this spend question.
- Whether you've added the "Ads using product data" segment, if the business runs a Merchant Center feed. Without it, the Shopping share stays hidden inside the general channel totals.
Possible approaches
- If the channel performance report is already available, use the channel distribution table directly as your primary, accurate source for the Display and Video spend share.
- If the report hasn't rolled out to your account yet, contact Google Ads support and ask about timing, since this is a purpose-built tool for exactly this task.
- For historical data from before the report existed, use the placement report as a limited, indirect indicator, understanding its official limitations rather than treating it as a performance metric.
- Don't rely on indirect signals, like asset-level metrics for individual images or videos, as a substitute for the real report. Google notes that the same image asset can serve on Discover, YouTube, or as a Search extension, which muddies any attempt to isolate Display or Video spend through asset data alone.
