A quick primer
It's worth separating two different tools first. The Insights page and the channel performance report answer different questions. Insights is curated for you based on account performance and searches across Google related to what you advertise, and it updates daily.
The page has several sections, each with its own purpose. Budget pacing insights show how campaigns are spending and forecast monthly spend. Diagnostic insights flag common reasons a campaign might not be serving or converting, such as paused ad groups, an account suspension, or low Ad Strength. Search trends show search volume trends for products and services relevant to your business, so you can respond to shifting demand.
The trends section is broken down further: it covers three comparison types, week-over-week, month-over-month, and year-over-year, the last comparing the last 28 days of search volume to the same 28 days a year earlier, which is a direct way to separate a recurring market shift from something specific to your account. There's also demand forecasting: demand starts rising, you can track it as a search trend and compare the new search behavior against your own performance; the data updates daily and forecasts get refined as real data comes in.
What to check before you touch anything
- Are you checking the Insights page regularly, ideally daily. Insights refresh every day, and a one-off check can miss something relevant.
- Which section fits your question. Diagnostic insights for "why isn't the campaign serving," search trends for "what's happening with market demand," budget pacing for "how is the budget being spent."
- Does a spike or drop in your account performance line up with a specific date range in search trends, especially the year-over-year comparison. A match there points to a market cause rather than an internal one.
- Are you confusing the Insights page with the channel performance report. The first gives you the why and the market context; the second shows exactly where (which channel) that's showing up.
- Insights aren't generated for every account and campaign at every point in time. Not seeing one right now doesn't necessarily mean nothing is changing.
Possible approaches
- If a campaign suddenly stops serving or converting, start with diagnostic insights, since they point directly at common technical causes (paused settings, suspensions, low Ad Strength).
- If you're concerned about a performance swing with no obvious internal cause, cross-check the period against search trends, especially year-over-year, to separate seasonal market movement from an account-side change.
- If you need to plan ahead (for a season, for example), use the upcoming demand forecasts to prepare budget, assets, and landing pages before demand actually rises.
- Use the Insights page and the channel performance report together rather than separately. One explains the market context; the other shows how that context played out across channels.
- Check the page on an ongoing basis, not just when something has already gone wrong. That's how you catch a rising demand trend early instead of after the fact.
