What should I do if PMax shows on irrelevant competitor brand searches?

A quick primer

The official, purpose-built tool for this is brand exclusions, not negative keywords: Google recommends brand exclusions to keep a PMax campaign off specific brand searches — whether your own or a competitor's. This isn't the same mechanism as ordinary negative keywords: brand exclusions automatically block common misspellings and related sub-brands too, covering spelling variants that would be impractical to list manually.

The exclusion is applied through a brand list, built once and then attached to whichever campaigns need it: you can add brand exclusions when creating a campaign or to an existing one through settings, and for PMax, brand exclusions apply to Search and Shopping inventory specifically — not every PMax surface. Official guidance also flags the trade-off directly: brand exclusions are powerful, but should be used only where needed, since over-applying them limits conversion opportunities.

What to check before you touch anything

  • Whether this is really a competitor's brand name showing, or adjacent-but-not-branded semantics that merely overlaps in meaning — a different problem, not solved by brand exclusions.
  • Which report surfaced the issue — if it's the PMax search terms report, confirm the volume is actually meaningful, not a one-off case.
  • Whether a brand list for competitors already exists in the account, or needs to be built from scratch.
  • Whether excluding the competitor's brand could have unintended effects on Shopping visibility — you can separately allow Shopping ads to keep serving on excluded brand terms if that's the right call for the business.
  • Whether showing on the competitor's brand searches is actually a deliberate strategy (competitive conquesting) — in that case, excluding it could be counterproductive, and it's worth deciding explicitly whether an exclusion is even wanted.

Possible approaches

  • If showing on a competitor's brand searches is undesirable — build a brand list with competitor names and apply brand exclusions to the relevant PMax campaign, instead of trying to enumerate every spelling variant as ordinary negative keywords.
  • If it still matters to stay visible in Shopping on those same terms (price comparison, for example) — use the option that lets Shopping ads keep serving on excluded brand terms, without touching Search/YouTube search serving.
  • If it's unclear whether competitive conquesting is even worth it for the business — before excluding, check the volume and quality (conversions, CPA) of traffic from those terms; it may be delivering an acceptable result, and an exclusion would just cut volume for no gain.
  • Apply brand exclusions to specific campaigns where the problem is actually confirmed, not pre-emptively across the whole account — over-applying limits reach where there was no problem to begin with.
